The location:

We’re back to planting in Schaffhausen!

This action started under the request of a group of 30 students from the Kanstschule Wettingen, in nearby Aargau . Following a class trip abroad, they wanted to try and compensate for the emissions of their travel in a way they could be involved directly and, hopefully, longer-lasting. We discussed different strategies and the limitations and uncertainties associated with CO2-compensation (certified or not), including tree-planting: the emissions are certain and immediate, but compensation is always uncertain and can take many decades, during which much can happen.

In cooperation with the cantonal forester, we settled on planting a mix of around 170 native trees (oaks, walnut, yew, ash and field maples) and 16 larger hedgerow plants, to adapt a patch of forest to changing climatic conditions and a more biodiverse forest. These plants should have the chance to grow in place for at least 40 years, under the care of the canton.

The students will be able to plant their own trees, with our supervision and support. The “Kantonsforstamt” (Cantonal Forestry Department) of Schaffhausen will remain, as owner of the space, responsible for the maintenance of the new plants.
