This Data Privacy Policy provides the necessary relevant information for the use of the website of REFORESTATION WORLD (the “Website”), at https://www.reforestationworld.org/, as required by current Swiss Law and European legislation.

This Website is subject to Swiss data protection law, in particular in accordance with the Federal Data Protection Act (Bundesgesetz über den Datenschutz, or DSG), as well as any applicable foreign data protection law, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union (EU). The EU recognizes that Swiss data protection law ensures adequate data protection.

Please note that we make a functional distinction between normal, anonymous readers of the Website’s content (“Visitors”) and those who submit information, including personal data as defined under the GDPR, via the online forms in connection with our registration process for projects, association members or subscribers (the “Registered users”), as detailed below. If you have any questions or concerns about this privacy notice, or our practices with regards to your personal information, please contact us at contact@reforestationworld.org.

The Website is managed with the WordPress CMS and hosted by the Swiss provider Cyon with all data being stored in Switzerland. Access to our Website is done via the HTTPS protocol, with a transport encryption (SSL / TLS) certificate issued by Let’s Encrypt.

Other than server analytics run by the Hosting company, the Website does not use additional analytics, statistics and/or tracking software. Cookies are deliberately kept to a functional minimum, and only to ensure proper viewing of the Website’s contents in specific circumstances (see more details below).

No personal details are requested from our visitors for normal viewing of the website. Contact by e-mail is to be done directly by the visitor’s means of choice, not via the website.

Access to this website is subject – like any Internet use – to lawful monitoring by official authorities in Switzerland and other countries from which the visitor might access this website or through which the information might flow or be processed during said visit. Information that might be processed includes, amongst others, the originating IP address and unique machine or browser identifiers. We have no direct influence on the corresponding processing of personal data by internet service providers and public agencies or authorities.

This information (hereafter, “Your information”) is automatically collected by our Hosting provider and internet service providers when you visit, use or navigate the Website. This information does not reveal your specific identity (like your name or contact information) but may include device and usage information, such as your IP address, browser and device characteristics, operating system, language preferences, referring URLs, device name, country, location, information about how and when you use our Website and other technical information.

FOR REGISTERED USERS: Additional information, including personal data and electronic documents containing personal data, might be requested as part of our processes. These are detailed in the individual forms and require the explicit consent of the applicants when being submitted.

How do we use your information?

In more detail, we may process or share data that we hold based on the following legal basis:

  • Legal Obligations: We may disclose information where we are legally required to do so in order to comply with applicable law, governmental requests, a judicial proceeding, court order, or legal process, such as in response to a court order or a subpoena (including in response to public authorities to meet national security or law enforcement requirements).
  • Vital Interests: We may disclose information where we believe it is necessary to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding potential violations of our policies, suspected fraud, situations involving potential threats to the safety of any person and illegal activities, or as evidence in litigation in which we are involved.

We will only keep your personal information for as long as it is necessary for the purposes set out in this privacy notice, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law (such as tax, accounting or other legal requirements). No purpose in this notice will require us keeping your personal information for longer than 6 months.

When we have no ongoing legitimate business need to process your personal information, we will either delete or anonymize such information, or, if this is not possible (for example, because your personal information has been stored in backup archives), then we will securely store your personal information and isolate it from any further processing until deletion is possible.

FOR REGISTERED USERS: same as above.

How do we keep your information safe?

FOR NORMAL VISITORS: This information is safeguarded through a system of organizational and technical security measures.

We have implemented appropriate technical and organizational security measures designed to protect the security of any personal information we might process. However, since no electronic transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure, we cannot guarantee that hackers, cybercriminals, or other unauthorized third parties will not be able to improperly collect, access, steal, or modify the information we store. Therefore, transmission of personal information to and from our Website is at your own risk. You should only access the Website within a secure environment.

Controls for do-not-track features

We do not use any tracking technologies in this Website.

In general, most web browsers and some mobile operating systems and mobile applications include a Do-Not-Track (“DNT”) feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. At this stage no uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, we do not currently respond to DNT browser signals or any other mechanism that automatically communicates your choice not to be tracked online. If a standard for online tracking is adopted that we must follow in the future, we will inform you about that practice in a revised version of this privacy notice.

Do we make updates to this notice?

Yes, we will update this notice as necessary to stay compliant with relevant laws.

We may update this privacy notice from time to time. The updated version will be indicated by an updated “Revised” date and the updated version will be effective as soon as it is accessible. If we make material changes to this privacy notice, we may notify you either by prominently posting a notice of such changes or by directly sending you a notification. We encourage you to review this privacy notice frequently to be informed of how we are protecting your information.

How can you contact us about this notice?

If you have questions or comments about this notice, you may email us at contact@reforestationworld.org.

How can you review, update or delete the data we collect from you?

Based on the applicable laws of your country, you may have the right to request access to the personal information we might collect from you, change that information, or delete it in some circumstances. To request to review, update, or delete your personal information, please submit a request by e-mail at contact@reforestationworld.org. We will respond to your request within 30 days.
