Planting action in Schaffhausen (SH) – results

Restoration, Switzerland

Closing our Fall planting season, we conducted two actions in Schaffhausen with a total of new 130 native plants

At the beginning of the November, benefiting from nice Autumn weather, we conducted two separate planting actions in a patch of cantonal forest near the town of Schaffhausen.
The area had been fully cleared sometime before, to contain the propagation of borer beetles who had damaged or killed several of the existing trees and led to a larger clear-cutting of about 1ha of forest. Our goal was to repopulate the area with a mix of native species of trees and to create a new hedge along one of the forest paths. In coordination with the Cantonal Forestry Service, the owner of the land, we planned the intervention. 23 species of trees and bushes were selected for this area, from larger nut trees and oaks to smaller wild rose bushes, considering their biodiversity value and tolerance to future possible changes in local climate.
The first action was open to families and we had nearly 30 participants of different ages. The second action, a few days later, was done with a group of 15 employees from a local company, who also co-sponsored the planting. The mood was enthusiastic and, over a few hours of work on the hilly patch, we added 130 new plants and a few wood piles as structures for wildlife, all with the valuable support and guidance of the local cantonal forester. We really appreciated the dedication and interest of the participants 🤩. A big thank you to all 🙏
We look forward to seeing this area recover over the coming years! The “Kantonsforstamt” (Cantonal Forestry Department) of Schaffhausen will remain, as owner of the space, responsible for the maintenance of the new plants.
